Truth of the Week: Family / Friends / Celebrities

As long as we realize what we as humans in a society have in common and how interconnected everything is, we can disagree on other things (celebrate our differences) and have our little vices and addictions. As long as we act on responsibility and shared values, we can have social cohesion. As long as we respect ourselves and fellow humans as sacred souls on a sacred journey, as Gods, we can work towards world peace in a highly spiritual way.

These quotes were selected due to their complementary nature to my mission statement. They represent Truth, a Holy quality in reality. Though we live in a relative world, a subjective and existential world, some Absolute Truth slips through the cracks of the Afterlife into ours. I got some funny stuff in here to keep you laughing, because laughter is the language of the soul.

People:
Mom
Education:
Incorporate a value system in the schools
Find at least 10 things everyone can agree on such as honesty, compassion, responsibility etc. and with every book that is read, every history paper, etc. the teacher asks the students to find examples of that month’s theme.

Parenting:
You don’t want to separate a kid from their parents but what happens when the parents call the kids pieces of shit who won’t amount to anything, and beat them? Education starts with the family, and some families don’t carry this out, but you can’t go into people’s houses unless someone is getting hurt.
Me:
Children should learn about detrimental versus healthy family structures at a young age, so they can decide whether or not they want to get out of their home environment.

World Peace:
I used to think to myself: I can’t wait till all the races marry and have kids together so everyone’s skin color is beige and we’re all mixed. Then I realized that wasn’t the problem; people of common skin color will still find something to fight over with an “us vs. them” mentality. Look at Muslims with the Shi’as and Sunnis, right?
Now I realize that it’s great that the world is populated with different colors. Of course, we should find out what we all have in common. Biologically, we need to be reminded that scientists can prove that all humans are about 90% the same. But in terms of values and goals, we need to be constantly reminded that we share a lot of the same views in this aspect as well. Gently exploit the similarities, celebrate the differences- the differences are the fabric of the beauty of our species.

Meditation:
When you meditate, don’t look at something as good or bad. It is what it is. It has some function, some reason for being. Look at the object or whatever it is and say “do I agree with it? Do I agree with only parts of it? What does it inspire me to do?”

Self-Inflicted Pain:
Pain is inevitable
Suffering is optional

Me:
Judgment:
Is it objective? What is fair?
When I judge you I’m only judging parts of myself I no longer see fit…
(trying argument against drug testing: imposing morals on people)

Self-Expression:
Vital in a person’s life. Need to reflect divine part of self through expression of some sort or another. Tell a story in words or movements…

Dad
On going to heaven:
I still have to make my peace with that corner on the ceiling over there, where those three lines meet.
Is there one group like “Send him over here!” and another like “no send him over here! We want him!”
I want to be over here with the Protestants but the Catholics are like “get the fuck over here, what are you doing?” “No, you're with us, come on now!” “Oh shit where do I go?”
[it’s funnier when he tells it]
I think you go where all the good souls go

Rose: “I’m sorry”
Greg: “You’d be sorry either way”

Eric Coleman’s Quotes of the Week (post a link to this):
“A couple of hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success: "Never leave that till tomorrow," he said, "which you can do today." This is the man who discovered electricity. You'd think more people would listen to what he had to say. I don't know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I'd have to say it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, sometimes the fear is just of making a decision, because what if you're wrong? What if you're making a mistake you can't undo? The early bird catches the worm. A stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can't pretend we haven't been told. We've all heard the proverbs, heard the philosophers, heard our grandparents warning us about wasted time, heard the damn poets urging us to seize the day. Still, sometimes, we have to see for ourselves. We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's possiblity under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore. Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin really meant. That knowing is better than wondering, that waking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure, even the worst, beat the hell out of never trying.”
Meredith Grey

“The first step toward change is acceptance. Once you accept yourself, you open the door to change. That's all you have to do. Change is not something you do, it's something you allow.”
Will Garcia

“Powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Marianne Williamson

Don't let others rent space in your head for free.

Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are.Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.

"competition brings perfection" – unknown
Not sure if I agree with this. I mean, I have been reading signs in my school saying “competition breeds excellence” and I do agree that if it weren’t for competition, a lot of great music and innovations would not be here today, but I so dislike unbridled competition. It breeds rivalry, hatred, lying, cheating, stealing, violence, negativity, low self-esteem, egotism, and so many bad things as well! That’s why it needs limits; people shouldn’t take it too far.
America is a very competition-based society, and a lot of parents teach their children to become over-achievers and highly competitive at everything they do. I don’t like it. I like the Eastern ideal of interdependence and cooperation over personal achievement. Competition should last for only as long as it is needed to bring perfection and excellence, but not to the point where it pushes people past their limits and makes them go insane. It shouldn’t result in an east-coast versus west-coast feud. This is the whole “us vs. them” mentality that I think is destroying the world. There has to be a balance of powers, and strict ethical guidelines. I’m not saying don’t take chances; I’m saying don’t be a fucking asshole about it. Stay HUMBLE. Where did you get your skill, your virtue, and your opportunity from in the first place? Exactly.
